Clarence Day's most famous work is his autobiographical Life with Father
, published in 1935, which detailed humorous episodes in his family life during the 1890's in New York City.
Scenes from the book formed the basis for the Lindsey/Crouse play of the same name, which debuted on Broadway in 1939 and still holds the record for the number of performances by a non-musical. The Day family members -- all of whom have red hair -- include an irascible father, his devoted but determined wife, and four sons age 6 to 17. Life with Father is a family show in every sense of the word.
